Uh ... NO!
Today, Ted Leonsis tells us that he was at the Caps game in Tampa last night and was very impressed with the atmosphere in and around the arena (which I think had a lot to do with the fact that the Ning won the game, games are always more fun when you win).
However, Ted was very impressed with the Ning Ice Girls and seems to be considering adding this abomination to Caps games.
You know, I can live without Rock-n-Roll Part II, I can deal with the stupid, annoying, and overused goal horn (every freakin' team in the league has one, the siren was/is ours and an identity for this team), I've accepted the end of the famous "Pizza Goal", but adding Ice Girls would be the last straw. Do this Ted, and I promise you, I will mock them mercilessly, I don't care if they are a part of the organization.
Remember that infernal "Who Let The Dogs Out?" song ?(Yeah, I know, I just stuck that song in your head for the rest of the day) Well, Ted didn't play the song once, ever, at a Caps game; unlike some local owners who blared the song after every basic play that yielded a mildly positive result for his team. That was and remains until this day, a good idea.
I remember the summer of 1996 when "The Macarena" was all the rage. It was played endlessly everywhere and when it was played at U.S. Air Arena in October of that year at a Caps game in the third period; it was loudly and resoundingly booed and never heard again at a Caps game. As a matter of fact, I can't remember the last time "Y.M.C.A." was played at a Caps game. And for that, I am grateful.
Simply put, we don't need Ice Girls. I seriously doubt that Ice Girls will significantly boost attendance or the game experience for fans. Personally, I think we've got the right idea with having local youth hockey players come out to help sweep up the ice shavings. Let's be the one who sets a trend, not somebody who follows along.
